In Abhilash Joshiy’s first movie as a director, “King of Kotha,” written by Abhilash N. Chandran, these little tweaks are what keep us engaged in a well-known story of gangsters. Some of these changes work really well and keep us interested, while others fall a bit flat.

The most interesting parts are when two friends who used to be close become enemies (which drives the story). But there are also parts that don’t work as smoothly.

Like in many other movies like this, the main character in “Kotha Raju” (played by Dulquer Salmaan) is tough and violent, but he’s against selling drugs. However, his reason isn’t some big moral belief, but because his girlfriend Tara (played by Aishwarya Lekshmi) doesn’t like drugs. This causes problems between Raju and his best friend Kannan (played by Shabeer Kallarakkal), who was memorable as ‘Dancing Rose’ in Sarpatta Parambarai.

The story is told from the perspective of a police officer named Shahul Hassan (played by Prasanna Kumar), who shows us what’s happening now, and a subordinate officer who tells us about the past. We hear lots of stories about Raju, who was a big deal, and now Kannan is in charge. The movie builds up Raju’s legend before finally showing him, but even though he’s important, he doesn’t really make the screen exciting, partly because of how the story is written. The lines meant to be powerful don’t have a big impact.
