In a press statement, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney voiced his strong stance on the recent mass shooting in Kingsessing, emphasizing the need for accountability and stricter gun control measures. Mayor Kenney expressed his belief that the gun dealer responsible for selling firearms to the shooter should face legal action that would ultimately force them out of business.

During the Fourth of July Celebration of Freedom Ceremony, Mayor Kenney expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the sources of such violence. He questioned how the shooter obtained a semi-automatic handgun and where they acquired a bulletproof vest, highlighting the necessity for a comprehensive reevaluation of the nation’s approach to firearms.

The shooting, which occurred near 56th Street and Chester Avenue, resulted in the loss of five lives and left two children injured—a 2-year-old and a 13-year-old. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw confirmed the suspect’s arrest on the 1600 block of Frazier Street. The individual was apprehended wearing a bulletproof vest and was found in possession of multiple magazines, a scanner, an AR-style rifle, and a handgun.

While another person is in custody, the connection between this individual and the shooter remains unclear, according to Commissioner Outlaw. Mayor Kenney expressed concern, stating that the suspect had apparently stockpiled multiple firearms in their residence.

Mayor Kenney urged the families of the victims to seek legal representation and take legal action against the gun dealers involved, emphasizing that their primary concern is profit rather than public safety. He called for immediate action by the state legislature and the U.S. Congress to address the pressing issue of gun violence, as the current situation is unacceptable.

Kenney concluded by expressing his distress over the presence of an individual openly carrying an AR-style gun and randomly targeting innocent people on city streets. He emphasized that such situations are disgraceful in the United States of America, regardless of the day, and called for a united effort to prevent future tragedies through comprehensive gun control reforms.
