In August 1969, Manson instructed his followers to carry out a series of brutal murders. On the night of August 8-9, four members of the Manson Family, under Manson’s direction, broke into the home of actress Sharon Tate in Los Angeles. Tate, who was eight months pregnant, along with four other individuals who were at the house at the time, were brutally murdered. The victims were stabbed, shot, and beaten to death in a horrifying and senseless act of violence.

The following night, Manson and his followers targeted Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, a couple living in Los Angeles. The couple was brutally killed in their own home, with multiple stab wounds and other injuries inflicted upon them. The words “Death to Pigs” and “Healter Skelter” (misspelled reference to “Helter Skelter,”

These heinous crimes shocked the nation and became a symbol of the dark side of the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Manson and several of his followers were eventually arrested and put on trial. The trial garnered significant media attention and further revealed the bizarre and manipulative nature of Manson’s cult.

In 1971, Manson and four of his followers were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, which was later commuted to life imprisonment after the California Supreme Court abolished the death penalty. Manson himself died in prison in 2017.

The Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders remain one of the most chilling and infamous crime stories in American history, illustrating the extreme capacity for violence and manipulation that can exist within certain individuals and cult-like organizations.
